Our Mission

Rallying our communities and the children within them to help children in need.

Our goal is to end family homelessness across our nation. Stephen’s Backpacks Society has become a powerful agent of change for children and families in need across Alberta. As of 2025, through generous donations from our local community and corporations worldwide, we have taken over 40 families permanently off the street and have delivered more than 100,000 backpacks filled with necessities for school, personal hygiene kits and toys.

Our Leadership

In January of 2008, Stephen’s Backpacks Society was officially formed. Our overall goal remains to continue the good work begun during Christmas 2006. We recognize and expect that to remain effective, we must continually find creative new ways to reach out to our communities. When Stephen McPhee spoke of a dream to help children in need, we recognized that this was not just a dream, but a vision of how things could be. We now consider ourselves charged with the task of casting that vision before us and our communities so that we can bring hope and support to those in need in our community. Our inspiration? The simple fact that if a five-year-old can envision a way to have an impact on his community, so can we.
